 POLICY and PRACTICE

October 2006

AIMS:

1.      To encourage the involvement of as many parents as possible in the development of their child?s learning.

2.      To help parents towards a greater understanding of the many ways in which they can foster their child?s interest in a range of learning activities.

3.      To provide a range of interesting and stimulating activities of good quality that encourage parents to spend time with their children.

4.      To contribute to the raising of standards in literacy and numeracy.

5.      To consolidate, extend or stimulate learning activities that take place  in school.

6.      To use activities undertaken at home as the basis of classroom work and / or displays ? this shows that we value and celebrate what is done at home.

7.      To set up systems of rewards that motivate and reward children, and in turn motivate parents in the continuing support of their child.

8.      To ensure that the system is manageable with and appropriate to all age groups.

9.      To ensure that the activities do not add excessively to teachers? workloads or require a disproportionately high level of input from learning support assistants.

Children who do not receive support outside school:

A major element of our ?helping at home? framework is the reward system, and we are sure that this will encourage a greater number of parents to support their children, who we feel will be motivated to participate. However, we recognise that it is likely that some children will continue to be unsupported at home, for a variety of reasons.

Our aim with these children is to encourage them to participate independently in their learning activities at home, for example by reading / practising spellings on their own. When children do this, rewards are well deserved. Learning support staff and volunteers can be valuable partners to such children in helping and encouraging them to develop independent learning strategies.

The value / possibility of setting up a homework club may be considered
